Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November, is a U.S. federal holiday for giving thanks, centered on a family meal. It opens the holiday season and is one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
History of Thanksgiving
It traces back to a 1621 harvest celebration shared by the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag people. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November in 1863, after a long campaign by editor Sarah Josepha Hale. Franklin Roosevelt moved it a week earlier in 1939 to lengthen the shopping season, and Congress fixed it on the fourth Thursday in 1941.
Thanksgiving today
