History of Black Friday
Philadelphia police used the name in the 1950s and 1960s for the traffic jams and crowds the day after Thanksgiving. Retailers later popularized the explanation that it was the day stores went "into the black," or became profitable, for the year.
Black Friday today
Stores open early with doorbuster deals, though many sales now start weeks before and run online through Cyber Monday. Small Business Saturday and GivingTuesday follow it.
