What is Columbus Day?
Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, is the federal holiday commemorating Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Many states and cities observe Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same Monday instead of, or alongside, Columbus Day.
History of Columbus Day
Italian American communities celebrated Columbus as a symbol of their heritage in the 1800s, and President Benjamin Harrison called for a national celebration on the 400th anniversary in 1892. Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937 and moved to the second Monday in October in 1971. In 2021 President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples' Day.
