What is Gold Star Mother's Day?
Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day, the last Sunday in September, honors the mothers and families of service members who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
History of Gold Star Mother's Day
During World War I, families hung service flags with a blue star for each family member serving and a gold star for one who had died. American Gold Star Mothers was founded in 1928, and Congress designated Gold Star Mother's Day by joint resolution in 1936. Recent proclamations have extended the recognition to whole families.
