What is American Eagle Day?
American Eagle Day, June 20, celebrates the bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States, and the conservation effort that brought it back from the brink of extinction. It is a commemorative day, not a public holiday.
History of American Eagle Day
The date marks June 20, 1782, when the Continental Congress adopted the Great Seal of the United States with a bald eagle at its center. By the 1960s pesticides such as DDT and habitat loss had cut the population in the lower 48 states to a few hundred nesting pairs. After DDT was banned and the species was protected, it recovered and was removed from the endangered species list in 2007. In December 2024 a federal law formally named it the national bird.
American Eagle Day today
Zoos, nature centers and conservation groups hold eagle talks and education programs, and the American Eagle Foundation promotes the day. It is a good occasion to visit a wildlife refuge where eagles nest.
