What is Earth Day?
Earth Day, April 22, is a worldwide day of action for environmental protection. It is often described as the largest secular observance in the world, with events in nearly every country.
History of Earth Day
The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, was organized by Senator Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes; an estimated 20 million Americans took part in rallies and teach-ins. It helped build support for the Environmental Protection Agency, created that December, and for laws such as the Clean Air Act. Earth Day went global in 1990, and the Paris climate agreement was signed on Earth Day 2016.
Earth Day today
People plant trees, clean up parks and beaches, and join climate marches and school activities. EARTHDAY.ORG announces a theme each year, and the United Nations marks it as International Mother Earth Day.
