What is Human Rights Day?
Human Rights Day, December 10, marks the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global statement of the rights every person is entitled to.
History of Human Rights Day
The UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration in Paris on December 10, 1948, after a drafting committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt. Human Rights Day was established in 1950. The Declaration has been translated into more than 500 languages, more than any other document.
Human Rights Day today
The UN Human Rights Office leads a yearly theme, and governments, schools and advocacy groups hold events. The Nobel Peace Prize is also presented on December 10.
