History of International Day for Tolerance
UNESCO's member states adopted the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance on November 16, 1995, during the UN Year for Tolerance. The UN General Assembly invited countries to observe the day in 1996.
International Day for Tolerance today
UNESCO awards the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence, and schools and community groups hold dialogues and education programs.
