What is Flag Day?
Flag Day, June 14, celebrates the adoption of the flag of the United States. It is a national observance, not a federal holiday, and it shares its date with the U.S. Army's birthday.
History of Flag Day
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution, declaring that the flag would have thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Flag Day in 1916, and in 1949 Congress made it a permanent national observance. Pennsylvania is the only state that treats it as a state holiday.
