What is Armed Forces Day?
Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May, honors the people currently serving in all branches of the U.S. military. It falls during Military Appreciation Month and is the center of Armed Forces Week.
History of Armed Forces Day
After the services were unified under the Department of Defense, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced in 1949 that a single Armed Forces Day would replace the separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force days. President Harry Truman supported the change, and the first Armed Forces Day was held on May 20, 1950, with parades and open houses across the country.
Armed Forces Day today
Bases hold open houses, air shows and parades, and communities thank active-duty service members. It differs from Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service, and from Veterans Day, which honors everyone who has served.
