What is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day, November 11, honors everyone who has served in the U.S. armed forces, living or dead. It always falls on November 11, whatever the weekday, to keep the meaning of the original Armistice Day.
History of Veterans Day
Fighting in World War I stopped at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, when the armistice took effect. Armistice Day became a federal holiday in 1938, and in 1954 Congress renamed it Veterans Day to include veterans of all wars. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act briefly moved it to October from 1971, but it returned to November 11 in 1978.
Veterans Day today
A national ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery, with a wreath laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and towns hold parades and services. Federal offices and banks close; many businesses stay open and offer discounts to veterans.
