What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. It is distinct from Veterans Day in November, which thanks everyone who has served.
History of Memorial Day
The day grew out of Decoration Day, when Americans decorated the graves of Civil War dead with flowers. General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic called for a nationwide observance on May 30, 1868. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the last Monday in May starting in 1971, and the name Memorial Day became standard.
Memorial Day today
Flags are flown at half-staff until noon, and the National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause for a minute at 3:00 p.m. local time. Volunteers place flags on graves at national cemeteries, including Arlington, where the President traditionally lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The long weekend is also the unofficial start of summer.
