What is Purple Heart Day?
Purple Heart Day, August 7, honors recipients of the Purple Heart, the medal awarded to U.S. service members wounded or killed by enemy action.
History of Purple Heart Day
On August 7, 1782, General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit, a purple cloth heart, for acts of merit. It fell out of use after the Revolution and was revived as the Purple Heart medal in 1932, on the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth. More than a million have been awarded.
Purple Heart Day today
Veterans groups, including the Military Order of the Purple Heart, hold ceremonies, and many towns and states designate themselves Purple Heart communities.
