What is Election Day?
Election Day is the day Americans vote in federal general elections: for President every four years, and for every seat in the House of Representatives and about a third of the Senate every two years. Many state and local elections are held on the same day.
History of Election Day
Congress set a single national date for presidential elections in 1845 and later extended it to House and Senate races. November suited a farming country, after the harvest and before winter travel got hard, and Tuesday gave voters a day to travel to the county seat without journeying on the Sunday Sabbath.
