What is Daylight Saving Time?
Daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March, when clocks in most of the United States "spring forward" from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. The night is an hour shorter, and evenings get an extra hour of daylight until November.
History of Daylight Saving Time
The United States first adopted daylight saving time nationally in 1918 to save fuel during World War I, and used year-round "War Time" during World War II. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 set national start and end dates, and the Energy Policy Act of 2005 moved the start to the second Sunday in March from 2007.
Daylight Saving Time today
Phones and computers change automatically, but some clocks must be reset by hand. Hawaii, most of Arizona and the U.S. territories stay on standard time. Proposals to make daylight saving time permanent, such as the Sunshine Protection Act, have not become law.

How the Daylight Saving Time date is calculated
- Since 2007, U.S. daylight saving time has run from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November (Energy Policy Act of 2005), with clocks changing at 2:00 a.m. local time.
- March 1, 2027 is a Monday, so the first Sunday is March 7 and the second is March 14. That makes Daylight Saving Time Sunday, March 14, 2027.
- The countdown counts calendar days from today to March 14, 2027. The start date is excluded and the end date is included. Dates use Eastern Time (America/New_York).
- The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of March 14, 2027 in Eastern Time (America/New_York). A countdown day is 24 hours, so a daylight-saving change can make it differ from the calendar-day count by an hour.
- Calculated at 6:29 AM on October 24, 2026.
- U.S. business days exclude Saturday, Sunday and observed nationwide federal closures; individual employer and state schedules are not included.
