Tax Day is the deadline for filing individual federal income tax returns and paying any tax owed to the Internal Revenue Service. It is normally April 15, unless that falls on a weekend or a holiday.
History of Tax Day
The modern federal income tax began in 1913 after the 16th Amendment was ratified, with returns due March 1. The deadline moved to March 15 in 1918 and to April 15 starting with the 1955 tax year. The IRS can postpone it for disaster areas, as it did nationwide in 2020 and 2021.
