What is World Book Day?
World Book and Copyright Day, April 23, celebrates books and reading and promotes the protection of authors' rights. It is different from World Book Day in the United Kingdom and Ireland, held in March.
History of World Book Day
UNESCO chose the date in 1995 because April 23, 1616, is the date of death of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, although under different calendars. The idea drew on the Catalan tradition of Sant Jordi's Day, when people give books and roses.
World Book Day today
Libraries, schools and bookshops hold reading events, and UNESCO names a World Book Capital city for a year starting on April 23.
