History of Valentine's Day
It is named after Saint Valentine, an early Christian martyr whose life is known mostly through legend. The day's link with romance first appears in the 1300s in the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer. In the 1840s Esther Howland began selling mass-produced valentines in Massachusetts, and the card tradition took off in America.
Valentine's Day today
