What is Father's Day?
Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, honors fathers and father figures. It is one of the biggest days of the year for greeting cards, family meals and gifts.
History of Father's Day
Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, raised by her widowed father, campaigned for a day to honor fathers, and the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. It took decades to win national recognition: President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed it in 1966, and President Richard Nixon signed the law making it permanent in 1972.
Father's Day today
Families spend the day together over brunch, barbecues and outings, and give cards and gifts. Many other countries also celebrate on the third Sunday of June, while others use different dates.
