What is Grandparents Day?
National Grandparents Day, the first Sunday after Labor Day, honors grandparents and the role they play in families. It usually falls in the second week of September.
History of Grandparents Day
Marian McQuade of West Virginia campaigned for the day to honor grandparents and to encourage visits to older people in nursing homes. Congress passed the legislation, and President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first National Grandparents Day in 1978. Its official flower is the forget-me-not.
