What is Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah, Hebrew for "head of the year," is the Jewish New Year. It is celebrated for two days and begins the Ten Days of Repentance, or Days of Awe, that end with Yom Kippur.
History of Rosh Hashanah
The Torah describes the first day of the seventh month as a day of rest marked by the blowing of a horn. In rabbinic tradition it became the new year and the anniversary of the creation of the world, when God judges all people.
Rosh Hashanah today
The shofar, a ram's horn, is blown in synagogue, and families eat apples dipped in honey and round challah for a sweet year. Many perform tashlich, symbolically casting away sins into flowing water.

How the Rosh Hashanah date is calculated
- Rosh Hashanah is on 1 Tishrei in the Hebrew calendar. That calendar follows the moon but adds a leap month seven times every 19 years, so the holiday stays in the same season while its Gregorian date moves by up to a few weeks.
- 1 Tishrei 5788 is Saturday, October 2, 2027. Jewish days begin at sundown, so Rosh Hashanah starts on the evening of Friday, October 1, 2027.
- The countdown counts calendar days from today to October 2, 2027. The start date is excluded and the end date is included. Dates use Eastern Time (America/New_York).
- The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of October 2, 2027 in Eastern Time (America/New_York). A countdown day is 24 hours, so a daylight-saving change can make it differ from the calendar-day count by an hour.
- Calculated at 6:30 AM on October 24, 2026.
- U.S. business days exclude Saturday, Sunday and observed nationwide federal closures; individual employer and state schedules are not included.
