What is Yom Kippur?
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the Jewish year, devoted to repentance, prayer and fasting. It ends the Ten Days of Repentance that begin with Rosh Hashanah.
History of Yom Kippur
The Torah sets the day on the 10th of the seventh month, Tishrei. In ancient times the high priest performed the atonement ritual in the Temple in Jerusalem; after the Temple was destroyed, prayer and repentance took its place.
Yom Kippur today
Many Jews fast for about 25 hours, from before sundown until after nightfall, and spend much of the day in synagogue, starting with the Kol Nidre service and ending with Neilah and a final blast of the shofar. White clothing is traditional.

How the Yom Kippur date is calculated
- Yom Kippur is on 10 Tishrei in the Hebrew calendar. That calendar follows the moon but adds a leap month seven times every 19 years, so the holiday stays in the same season while its Gregorian date moves by up to a few weeks.
- 10 Tishrei 5788 is Monday, October 11, 2027. Jewish days begin at sundown, so Yom Kippur starts on the evening of Sunday, October 10, 2027.
- The countdown counts calendar days from today to October 11, 2027. The start date is excluded and the end date is included. Dates use Eastern Time (America/New_York).
- The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of October 11, 2027 in Eastern Time (America/New_York). A countdown day is 24 hours, so a daylight-saving change can make it differ from the calendar-day count by an hour.
- Calculated at 6:29 AM on October 24, 2026.
- U.S. business days exclude Saturday, Sunday and observed nationwide federal closures; individual employer and state schedules are not included.
