What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of prayer, fasting and repentance before Easter in Western Christianity. It falls 46 days before Easter Sunday, counting the 40 days of Lent plus the six Sundays.
History of Ash Wednesday
The practice of marking the beginning of Lent with ashes, an ancient sign of penitence and mortality, was widespread in the Western church by the Middle Ages. The ashes are traditionally made by burning palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sunday.
Ash Wednesday today
Catholics and many Protestants attend services where a cross of ashes is marked on the forehead with words such as "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." For Catholics it is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat.
