What is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, commemorates Jesus's entry into Jerusalem, when crowds laid palm branches in his path. It begins Holy Week.
History of Palm Sunday
The Gospels describe the triumphal entry a few days before the crucifixion. Processions with palm branches were recorded in Jerusalem by the late 300s and spread through the church.
Palm Sunday today
Churches hand out palm fronds, which some people fold into small crosses, and hold processions and readings of the Passion. The palms are often saved and burned the following year to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday.
