What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras, French for "Fat Tuesday," is the last day of feasting and celebration before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It is the climax of the Carnival season, famous in New Orleans.

History of Mardi Gras

The tradition came to the Gulf Coast with French settlers; Mobile, Alabama, traces its celebrations to the early 1700s. In New Orleans, the Mistick Krewe of Comus held the first modern organized parade in 1857, and the colors purple, green and gold became the city's Mardi Gras colors in the 1870s.

Mardi Gras today

Krewes stage parades with floats, riders throw beads and trinkets to crowds, and people eat king cake, which hides a small baby figurine inside. It is a legal holiday in several Louisiana parishes.

How the Mardi Gras date is calculated

  • Western Easter is the first Sunday after the church's full moon on or after March 21. The full moon comes from fixed church tables (the Gregorian computus), not from watching the sky, so Easter always falls between March 22 and April 25.
  • For 2027 the tables give Sunday, March 28, 2027. Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar for the same rule, so their Easter is often later.
  • Mardi Gras is 47 days before Easter. With Easter on Sunday, March 28, 2027, Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 9, 2027.
  • The countdown counts calendar days from today to February 9, 2027. The start date is excluded and the end date is included. Dates use Eastern Time (America/New_York).
  • The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of February 9, 2027 in Eastern Time (America/New_York). A countdown day is 24 hours, so a daylight-saving change can make it differ from the calendar-day count by an hour.
  • Calculated at 6:28 AM on October 24, 2026.
  • U.S. business days exclude Saturday, Sunday and observed nationwide federal closures; individual employer and state schedules are not included.
