What is Passover?
Passover, or Pesach, is a Jewish festival celebrating the Exodus, the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It lasts seven days in Israel and eight days for many Jews elsewhere.
History of Passover
The festival is commanded in the Torah, and its name recalls the account of the tenth plague "passing over" the homes of the Israelites. It begins on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan, in spring.
Passover today
Families hold a Seder meal on the first night, and often the second, retelling the story from the Haggadah, drinking four cups of wine and eating symbolic foods from the Seder plate. Leavened bread is removed from the home, and matzah is eaten instead.

- Passover is on 15 Nisan in the Hebrew calendar. That calendar follows the moon but adds a leap month seven times every 19 years, so the holiday stays in the same season while its Gregorian date moves by up to a few weeks.
- 15 Nisan 5787 is Thursday, April 22, 2027. Jewish days begin at sundown, so Passover starts on the evening of Wednesday, April 21, 2027.
- The countdown counts calendar days from today to April 22, 2027. The start date is excluded and the end date is included. Dates use Eastern Time (America/New_York).
- The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of April 22, 2027 in Eastern Time (America/New_York). A countdown day is 24 hours, so a daylight-saving change can make it differ from the calendar-day count by an hour.
- Calculated at 6:21 AM on October 24, 2026.
- U.S. business days exclude Saturday, Sunday and observed nationwide federal closures; individual employer and state schedules are not included.
