What is International Women's Day?
International Women's Day, March 8, celebrates the achievements of women and calls for gender equality. It is a public holiday in several countries.
History of International Women's Day
It grew out of the labor and suffrage movements of the early 1900s. The Socialist Party of America held a National Woman's Day in 1909, and in 1910 Clara Zetkin proposed an international day at a conference in Copenhagen. A women's strike in Petrograd on March 8, 1917, helped start the Russian Revolution and fixed the date. The United Nations began observing it in 1975.
International Women's Day today
Marches, conferences and campaigns take place worldwide, along with awards for women's achievements. In the United States, March is also Women's History Month.
