History of Holocaust Remembrance Day
Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp on January 27, 1945. The UN General Assembly designated the date in 2005, and it was first observed in 2006. Israel holds its own Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah, in the spring.
