What is Arbor Day?
National Arbor Day, the last Friday in April, encourages people to plant and care for trees. Many states hold their own Arbor Day on a different date that suits their planting season.
History of Arbor Day
Journalist and later Secretary of Agriculture J. Sterling Morton proposed a tree-planting holiday for the largely treeless plains of Nebraska, and the first Arbor Day was held there on April 10, 1872, when an estimated million trees were planted. Other states followed, and the last Friday in April became the common national date.
Arbor Day today
Schools, cities and the Arbor Day Foundation organize tree plantings and giveaways, and many communities are recognized as Tree City USA.
