What is Patriot Day?
Patriot Day, September 11, honors the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in New York, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It is also a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
History of Patriot Day
Congress designated Patriot Day in December 2001. In 2009 it was also named a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging volunteer work in honor of the victims and first responders.
Patriot Day today
Flags fly at half-staff, and moments of silence are held at the times of the attacks, starting at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time. The victims' names are read aloud at the National September 11 Memorial in New York, and ceremonies take place at the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial.
