History of National Nurses Day
Recognition of nurses grew through the 1950s and 1970s, and in 1982 the American Nurses Association and Congress established May 6 as National Recognition Day for Nurses, proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan. The ANA later expanded the celebration to a full week.
