What is National Freedom Day?
National Freedom Day, February 1, commemorates the signing of the resolution that became the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. It falls on the first day of Black History Month.
History of National Freedom Day
President Abraham Lincoln signed the joint resolution proposing the 13th Amendment on February 1, 1865, and it was ratified that December. Major Richard R. Wright Sr., who was born into slavery and became an educator and banker, campaigned for a day to mark it, and President Harry Truman signed the law creating National Freedom Day in 1948.
