What is Lunar New Year?
Lunar New Year, also called Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, begins the new year in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China and is also celebrated in Vietnam as Tết, in Korea as Seollal and across Asian communities worldwide.
History of Lunar New Year
The festival has been celebrated for thousands of years and is tied to the agricultural calendar and to honoring ancestors. Each year is linked to one of twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, from the Rat to the Pig, in a repeating twelve-year cycle.

Families gather for a reunion dinner on New Year's Eve, give red envelopes of money, set off fireworks and hold lion and dragon dances. Celebrations last about two weeks and end with the Lantern Festival. In China, the travel rush around the holiday is one of the largest human migrations on Earth.
