What is New Year's Day?
New Year's Day, January 1, is the first day of the Gregorian calendar year and a U.S. federal holiday. Federal offices, banks and most businesses close, and it ends the run of year-end holidays that begins with Christmas.
History of New Year's Day
January 1 became the start of the civil year in Britain and its American colonies when they adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752; before that, the legal year began on March 25. Congress made New Year's Day a holiday for federal workers in the District of Columbia in 1870, along with Christmas, Independence Day and Thanksgiving, and it later applied to federal employees nationwide.
