What is Leif Erikson Day?
Leif Erikson Day, October 9, honors the Norse explorer believed to be the first European to reach North America, and celebrates Nordic American heritage.
History of Leif Erikson Day
Around the year 1000, Leif Erikson sailed from Greenland to a land the sagas call Vinland; the Norse site at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland confirms they reached North America about five centuries before Columbus. The date recalls October 9, 1825, when the ship Restauration reached New York with the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants. Congress authorized the day in 1964.
Leif Erikson Day today
The President issues a proclamation each year, and Nordic heritage groups, especially in the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest, hold festivals, lectures and parades.
