What is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day, February 2, is a light-hearted weather tradition: if the groundhog sees its shadow, folklore says there will be six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring.
History of Groundhog Day
It grew out of European weather lore tied to Candlemas on February 2, roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. German immigrants in Pennsylvania used a hedgehog or badger in the old country and adopted the groundhog in America. The first official celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, was held in 1887.
Groundhog Day today
Thousands gather at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney before dawn to hear Punxsutawney Phil's prediction, and other towns have their own forecasting groundhogs. The 1993 film "Groundhog Day" made the event famous worldwide.
