What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is the newest federal holiday, first observed by federal employees in 2021.
History of Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that enslaved people in Texas were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Freed people in Texas celebrated the anniversary the next year, and the tradition spread. Texas made it a state holiday in 1980, and President Joe Biden signed the federal holiday into law on June 17, 2021.
Juneteenth today
Communities hold parades, festivals, family reunions, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation and General Order No. 3, and cookouts. Red foods and drinks such as strawberry soda are a long-standing tradition.
